In my classroom I use Blogger for student portfolios. There is one entry per month for 10 entries per year. The blog entries are projects at the end of units or journal entries.  I am also using Blogger for this blog, Here I Teach!

WHEN IT IS BETTER THAN PAPER
1.  Embed Google slides, videos, Prezi's and Voice Threads into Blogger. Blogger works with MANY other apps.
2. Students parents and teachers can have access to the work forever online.
3. Student work is easily organized using labels. Organize by date, or student, or project name. Each entry can have multiple labels.
4. Give feedback on large projects using the comment section.
5. Archive the phases of a project with photos and videos for assignment progress checkpoints.
6. Have the instructions and the student work all in in place.
7. Scroll quickly through a students entire portfolio or one project from every student.

Formative for Teachers - click on the photo below to view the video

WHAT IT IS
*A tool to view ALL student responses in real time

MISSION

Frequent formal and informal checks for understanding guarantee student growth.
Know exactly what each student needs as they learn and take immediate actions.

TUTORIALS

IN MY CLASSROOM

I use Formative for Do Nows in every class. I create one Do Now assignment each week and have a question for each day. I also use Formative for problems of the Day, problems of the week and quizzes. I write the do now on regular paper, take a photo and upload it. The students write directly on the uploaded photo. I add number lines, graph paper, photos, videos and other media as needed.

WHEN IT IS BETTER THAN PAPER
1. See immediately who has started the do now and what each student is writing on their do now.
2. After the do now, share student work anonymously or by using their name.
3. Determine a point value for each question, quickly score each do now and give feedback. It saves time when I can cut and paste the same feedback for common error!
4. End the Do Now when time is up without collecting papers. Turn "off" the do now and student can no longer submit answers!
5. Insert videos and other media
6. Students can and write in different colors in Formative and easily erase.
7. Some question types are automatically scored (true false, short answer, multiple choice)

Still Here

Post election 2016 ...

We are still here. We are still teaching.

Still Here

Been scared and battered.
My hopes the wind done scattered.
Snow has friz me,
Sun has baked me,

Looks like between 'em they done
Tried to make me

Stop laughin', stop lovin', stop livin'--
But I don't care!
I'm still here!

Why I love Nanny McFee

Had a rough day at work?

You must!
Watch!
Nanny McFee!

I wish she was every teacher's fairy godmother.

------------------------------------------------------------------

(SPOILER ALERT BELOW)

I thought about a few things after watching these movies.
Sometimes we over complicate things. Kids have been acting out for centuries.
They smell blood in the water when the think the grown ups don't have control.
And the kids in the movie were traumatized from loss.
Sound familiar?

They had gotten rid of 17 nannies before Nanny McFee ... on purpose!

I could relate.
Several years ago, I walked into my East Oakland classroom midyear and the 8th grade girls informed me that they would make me cry and get me fired within two weeks like they did "that other teacher".

It didn't happen, but I can empathize with those poor nannies! And those poor kids. They had experienced a lot of loss. They tried all kinds of shenanigans. But I held my ground and stayed calm and let them know I wasn't going anywhere, and we became very close.

I like how she had a horrible face when she started and then she became beautiful at the end.
Clearly the happier the kids were, with clear boundaries and a sense of safety, they more they were able to "see" her beauty.
Notice also how she maintains an even, calm tone of voice.
No! Matter! What!

------------------------------------------------------------------

I like her simple management strategy and clear focus. She asked the dad to chose just three things he wanted the kids to do better.

1. Do they get up when they are told?
2. Do they go to bed when they are told?
3. Do they say please?

Sometimes a really out of control classroom problem has a very simple solution.
As a classroom teacher if you don't see that solution, it just looks like a whole lot of magic.

What could this look like in a classroom?
READ About my simple classroom management | Reflections, Good manners and using your community.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Nanny McFee focused on a few simple but important things, established her authority, was consistent and kept the children safe for their own sake.

I loved how she left, because don't we want to be able to walk away and know our students will be independent, polite, improving, and stronger after we leave them?
Isn't that the goal?

So again, watch
  • Nanny McFee and
  • Nanny McFee and the Big Bang.
But remember ...  no matter how much you wish, Nanny McFee and her magic can not come with you to your classroom tomorrow.
